This wonderful little book is quite scarce. Charles Van Sandwyk is a Vancouver artist and author who has attained renowned status and won numerous awards as a fantasy artist. His paintings can be found in the National Gallery of Canada and his illustrations are featured in such books as the Folio Society's "The Wind in the Willows" & the Blue Fairy Book, as well as his own self published books such as: "Sketches from the Dream Island of Birds".

The original hand drawn image depicts a whimsical little owl, raising one of it's wings and perched atop a decorative frame which contains Charles' signature and the date (2013). The image measures 2.5" X 2.5". Also included, placed loosely inside, is a small pamphlet containing a short biography and artist's statement.

An extra beige sheet of textured paper, rough on the sides, has been added after the cover page on which the drawings are done. A small sheet of thinner paper was also added for this copy following the first sheet. The first drawing is a small gold shooting star (1.5" X 3") on the first page after the wrappers. On the other side of this page Charles' has drawn a wonderful owl perched upon the moon and surrounded by stars. The image is hand coloured using gilt and brown tones, measures 5.5" X 4.5" and is signed beneath and dated (August, 2012). The final hand drawing, placed on the inner side of the final page, shows an owl's eyes and nose in a circle frame and is surrounded by small stars. This measures 2" X 2", is highlighted with spots of gilt and has the initials C.V.S. Below.

A beautiful copy of a wonderful book made extra special by the fantastic hand drawn additions.

Will o' the Wisps (For Tiny Hands)

2.5" X 1.75" (6 X 4.5 CM). Dark green marbled card wrappers. Title onlay on the spine. Accordion fold style beige pages. With 9 pages of illustration and writing (on only one side of paper, other side blank). Eight pages show a beautiful etching with many magical creatures with the final page containing the manuscript title, edition number (out of 35) and Van Sandwyk's signature. Book is held closed with a brown marbled paper loop that slides on and off. Stuck loosely under the loop is a green marbled cut out leaf, embossed with veins, which Van Sandwyk has also signed the back of. A wonderful, tiny little book.

 A rare little limited edition book signed twice by Van Sandwyk- a great addition to any collection of the artist's work.

Various sketches and paintings of animals and fantasy themes throughout. This edition includes an additional page before the title page containing an limited edition etching (46/100) of a beautifully detailed bee holding a candle and a book. The image is signed and numbered beneath.

On the back of the first page Charles has inscribed "This publication really came about because of the kindness of my high school mentor George Knepp". The inscription is also signed beneath and dated Sept 1st 2012. A wonderful copy.

A beautiful limited edition etching and special inscription make this book especially fantastic.

Contains seven etchings (including front title and title page), a few of which have hand-coloured highlights. All inner text is manuscript with a festive hand-drawn decoration on front free endpaper. All edges of pages uncut. Signed on the inside of the rear endpaper by Van Sandwyk.

A beautiful edition of this Christmas favorite. One of four copies made at the time. Artist's proof with several beautiful etchings of charming animals. Many of these same etchings were reproduced in the trade edition of Mr. Rabbit's Christmas wish, however, the mouse and cheese was not used. The effect of the original etchings is very different in this elegant and scarce version as compared with the trade edition.

Folio Society (2008), 280pp, London. Quarto (13" X 9.75"). Quarter vellum binding blocked in 22-carat gold with vellum tips and paper sides blocked in three metallic foils. Gilt top edge. Roughly 100 illustrations and 16 tipped-in colour plates with a hand-printed etching tipped onto the limitation page. With an Original full page watercolour by Van Sandwyk tipped in as a frontispiece. Comes in a cloth-bound solander box. In flawless condition. Copy number VI of 1000. This Folio Society edition follows the original 1908 Methuen and Co text.

Signed by Van Sandwyk on the limitation page. The watercolour which is unique to this copy of the book is of Ratty and Mole having a picnic on the riverbank. A truly unique copy.

Also comes with 13.5" X 20" illustrated map of Tavewa (dream) island (signed), 13.5" X 20" press proof page which is printed on both sides with the images used in the book upon unique paper (also signed) and a decorative folder with paste-down image of a parrot containing 13 postcards with reproductions of Van Sandwyk watercolours. On the back of the postcards it reads 'Greetings from Sunny Fiji'.

A beautiful book contrasted beautifully by several interesting pieces of Van Sandwyk ephemera all relating to Fiji, Charles's second home.

Small Octavo. (13.5 X 18.5 cm.) Printed paper covered boards with inset coloured etching on the front board. 12 etchings printed on Lana Royal interleaved with kozo tissue. Printed spider web design tissue behind the two endpapers. A wonderful copy.

Number 20 & 24 of an edition of 40 signed by the author. One of Charles most limited titles and a wonderful example of the authors talents. The book is entirely made up of etchings including text pages and title page. The choice of materials and design are a wonderful example of a handmade book.

Ten black and white photographs, including one fold-out. Twenty-one color photographs.

A beautiful tribute to Charles Van Sandwyk's mother, Beatrice M. Van Sandwyk. Includes memories from loved ones, images of her life, and a few touching stories. Signed by the author on front endpaper. This particular book does not feature the author's usual calligraphic writing, and is typed.
