Hall & Lowe.

Untitled Photograph [Fort Qu'appelle, Saskatchewan].

Main St., Winnipeg, Manitoba: Hall & Lowe, Photographers, [circa 1883]. Very good. Original photograph. 10.75 X 18.25 CM on 12.5 X 20 CM studio card. Photographers information on card below image. Image shows some fading and soiling. Studio card has rounded corners which are a little worn and chipped (though this does not affect the photograph). Card also shows some soiling and light stains. Hand-written title on rear.

Photograph looks out over a flat expanse of landscape and cluster of buildings in the distance. Fort Qu'Appelle is a town in southern Saskatchewan, Canada "located in the Qu'Appelle Valley 70 KM NE of Regina between Echo and Mission Lakes". It was originally established in 1864 as a Hudson's Bay Company trading post. in 1882 Hall took on Lowe as a partner in his photo studio in Winnipeg. Hall & Lowe advertised “Indian photos (taken from life), Xmas cards, views of Winnipeg” as well as images of horses, cattle, machinery, and buildings. But they did not confine themselves to taking studio portraits and landscapes around Winnipeg. In 1883 they also took pictures along the Canadian Pacific Railway line east and west (presumably it was on one of these trips that this photo was taken). In 1884 Hall took a trip out west and by the following year both men had left Winnipeg. In 1885 Lower had established a branch of their operation in Victoria, BC. In 1887 Hall opened a new studio at Vancouver. Their partnership dissolved in May 1892, when Hall became the sheriff of Vancouver.
