Mathers, Edmonton.

The Camp.

 

Edmonton: Mathers, [circa 1900]. Near fine. Original oval photograph mounted on black embossed studio card. Image is in excellent condition with only a bit of yellowish discolouration to the right side and bottom left corner (only visible on the thin white oval border that surrounds the image). Studio card has rounded corners with slight wear.

 

Image depicts a scene in which two men in hats lounge by the smoke of a cook fire. Two structures using sticks have been made to hang clothes and cook. Directly behind them is a tent like structure. In the background are two wooden wagons and a tipi with a bare expanse of prairie stretching behind.

 

Photograph by Charles W. Mathers, one of Edmonton's earliest photographers. He started in Photographer career working for Boorne and May in Calgary. In 1892 he was transferred to Edmonton to run the companies operation there. In 1893 he purchased their Edmonton studio and turned it into his own. Many of Mather's earlier photographs are related to the gold rush.
