Eighteen Hundred "Gems" of British Columbia

[Original Composite Photograph].Victoria, B. C.: , 1885. Very good. Original photograph mounted on card. Image measures 7.5 X 5.25" (19 X 13.3 CM) on card 9.25 X 5.75" (23.5 X 14.6 cm). Very good. Original photograph mounted on card. Image measures 7.5 X 5.25" (19 X 13.3 CM) on card 9.25 X 5.75" (23.5 X 14.6 cm). Image itself is in very nice condition with only a very slight crease near center, a few very small spots of wear and slight fading near edges. Card shows some wear to edges with a small closed tear to top right corner, large chip to top left corner and smaller chips to bottom corners (these do not effect the image, however).

Composite photo made from the 1800 children's portraits. The portraits have been cut out and are placed in the form of an artist's pallet with a few small brushes sticking out. The pallet shape is surrounded by three circles, two with comet trails following them (all again made out of several children's portraits. The three circles are labeled underneath 1881, 1882 and 1883 with the pallet shape labeled 1884. Beneath the pallet the title reads "Eighteen Hundred 'Gems' of British Columbia Greet you!".

The artist, Hannah Hatherly Maynard (1834-1918) was a woman of extraordinary character and independence. Born in Bude, England she sailed with her husband to Canada west in 1852, where they lived in Bowmanville, in what is now the province of Ontario. They subsequently emigrated to the Colony of Vancouver Island along with their 4 children in 1862. The Maynards traveled throughout the Pacific Northwest, creating an extensive collection of negatives. Hannah Maynard's photographs, however, are interesting for more than historical reasons. She experimented with every new photographic technique, and developed a vision that was surreal and unique. She was obsessed with her children, and haunted by the deaths in the family. She appears to have made these photo-composites of children's portraits annually from 1881-1891 from children's portraits take in the year or years previous.
