Walter Joseph Phillips (October 25, 1884 – July 5, 1963) was an English-born Canadian painter and woodcutter, acclaimed as one of Canada's most famous printmakers and for popularizing the colour woodcut in the style of the Japanese. His artistic career spanned from the 1900s through the 1940s, during which time his work was exhibited throughout North America and Great Britain. In 1940 he was asked to become a resident artist at the Banff Centre, then known as the Banff School of Fine Arts, where he played an important role in the development of their visual arts program. Its Walter Phillips Gallery, which focuses on contemporary art, is named after him. The Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Alberta holds an extensive collection of Phillips works and a research archive. Phillips' work reflects his direct response to nature.

Boulet MBL87. A beautiful woodcut by the famous Canadian artist depicting a shirtless young girl. The girl holds her arm to one side and looks sideways toward the water. Behind her is deep blue water and a rich green tree bushy with needles.

Boulet MBL88. A beautiful woodcut by the famous Canadian artist depicting a village in the English countryside from the family's trip to England 1924-25. The strong shapes of buildings stand out against a simple background. The thatched roofs and, in front of the buildings, soft green foliage, horse and carriage provide a delicate and interesting contrast.

A beautiful woodcut by the famous Canadian artist depicting a bridge in the town of Wylye where Phillip's and his family spend "a busy and frigid winter" during their trip to England 1924-25. In the image a delicate light at the bottom of a grayish sky settles over the strong lines of the towns roof's and organic texture of the bridge in the foreground.

This edition was used as a Christmas card by Phillips' in 1956. A strong image with bold lines, beautiful detail and interesting contrast between shadow and light.

Boulet MBL118. A beautiful colour woodcut by the famous Canadian artist. Depicting boulders distributed restfully on gentle slopes against a backdrop of gentle clouds. The peak of Mount Cathedral is visible to the right and Mount Stephen on the left (with the shoulder of Odaray to the extreme left). From a sketch made by Phillip's on a trip to the region around Lake O'Hara in the Canadian Rockies.

Boulet MBL237. Both the first and second editions consisted of 100. A very strong image depicting rich, rolling blue mountains and clear snowy ground beneath.

Image from the families stay in the English Countryside (Wylye) near the beginning of their stay in England in 1924-25. A warm and friendly image depicting a broad and beautiful valley. A soft patchwork of farmland lays softly across rolling hills broken up by clumps of yellow trees.

Boulet MBL233. Edition unknown, a later of Phillips' works. A bold image depicting a bear upon rocks with it's head turned and profile visible. Behind him delicate lines create a smooth waterfall. The excellent quality of framing and pristine condition makes this print especially desirable.

Boulet MBL240. At least 200-300 prints were produced in 1946 as Phillips' Christmas greeting card. An interesting image showing two skiers amidst the trees. The detail in the clothing and face of the closer skier provides a beautiful contrast to the simple green outlines of the trees behind.

Original colour woodcut. Signed at the bottom right corner, in pencil, by the artist. 8" X 6" (20.5 X 15.5 cm).

In brushed gilt and red wooden frame with off-white matting. Wire hanger at the back. Frame measures 13.5" x 12" (35 x 30.5 cm). A richly detailed image with soft warm colours; the woodcut shows a brick bridge which reflects beautifully in soft shadows onto the slowly drifting water beneath.

Boulet MBL127. Edition of 50. Eckington is a small village near to the southern border of the English county of Worcestershire. It is renowned for its famous bridge (pictured in the woodcut), which is also the subject of a poem by Arthur Quiller-Couch.

Signed at the bottom right corner, in pencil, by the artist. 8.5" x 7.25" (26.5 x 18.5 cm). In decorative painted wooden frame and beige matting. Frame measures 15.5" x 13.5" (39 x 34.5 cm) and is painted dark brown with wooden squares, which have been painted a more reddish brown, attached at the corners for decoration. The frame has a metal hanger at the back.

The woodcut displays bright and warm autumn colours which fill the soft, organic shapes trees, water and clouds.

Boulet MBL150. Edition of 200. The Assiniboine River (pictured in the woodcut) is a 1,070-kilometre (660 mi) river that runs through the prairies of Western Canada in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It is a tributary of the Red River.

Signed at the bottom right corner, in pencil, by the artist and numbered 294 on the opposite corner. 8.5 x 7.25" (22 x 18 cm). In thin gilt painted wooden frame and white matting; frame measures 14.5 x 13" (37 x 33.5 cm) and has a wire hanger on the back.

7.25 X 5.25" (18.5 X 13 cm). In gilt brushed wooden frame with white matting. Frame measures 13.25 X 13.5" (33.5 X 34.5 CM) and has a metal hanger at the back. Numbered 48 in pencil on the bottom left of the image with the artists signature, in pencil, on the bottom right.

The image is beautifully coloured, showing cheery white lilies floating among light waves and round playful lily pads.

Signed at the bottom right corner, in pencil, by the artist. 3.25 X 5.25" (8.5 X 13cm). In thin decorative wooden frame and white matting; frame measures 11.75 X 13.5" (30 X 35 CM) and has a metal hanger affixed to back (the frame is lightly worn).

A serene woodcut depicting a tree in the winter, blanketed with snow and casting it's playful shadow upon the bright ground beneath. A beautiful combination of blues and white.

In thin black frame with gilt decoration and off-white matting; frame measures 10 x 8" (25 x 20 cm). Wire hanger at the back.

Signed at the bottom right corner of the image, in pencil, by the author. Affixed to the back of the frame is a small card which says 'Christmas Greetings' and is signed "From Banff, Gladys and Walter Phillips".

A bold image depicting a lily floating around circular pads; the bold contrast, dynamic lines and subtle cross hatching make this small woodcut particularly interesting.
